The 2010 Minnesota secretary of state election was held on Tuesday, November 2, 2010, to elect the next Minnesota Secretary of State, who will serve a four-year term to begin in January 2011. The primary elections were held August 10, 2010. Incumbent Secretary of State Mark Ritchie of the Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party won re-election after an eventful first term in office, in which he oversaw the very tight election and subsequent recount in the 2008 U.S. Senate race between Al Franken and Norm Coleman.[1]
Candidates

Incumbent Mark Ritchie won endorsement at the Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party convention. He faced only token opposition in his party's primary from perennial candidate Dick Franson,[2] and easily won his party's nomination in the August 10, 2010 primary.[3]
Republican
State Rep. Dan Severson, R-Sauk Rapids received the endorsement of the Republican party at its state convention and was unchallenged in his party primary.[2]
Independence Party
Jual Carlson filed at the last minute as an Independence Party candidate. As the only IP candidate, he faced no opposition in the IP primary.[2] Carlson had previously sought office as a Republican.
